How to Use Your Strop & Compound

  1. Apply Compound Sparingly: Spread a thin, even coat along the strop surface—too much paste can clog.

  2. Maintain Angle: Draw the blade away from the edge at the same bevel angle used during sharpening.

  3. Alternating Sides: Strop each side of the blade evenly, typically 10–15 passes per side, until the burr disappears.

  4. Cleaning: Wipe your blade clean with a soft cloth, then brush the strop to remove metal particles.

Choosing the Right Kit

  • Blade Steel: Harder steels benefit from diamond or white aluminium oxide compounds; softer tool steels work well with green Chromium Oxide.

  • Strop Size & Style: If you have multiple knives, a larger paddle strop offers more workspace; for travel or limited bench space, choose compact hanging strips.

  • Compound Grit: Start with green for general-purpose stropping; graduate to white or diamond paste for ultrafine finishing.
